MOOC
A class with tens or even hundreds of thousands of students might sound like a teachers bad dream. But a big idea in higher education these days is the massiveopen online course, or MOOC.
Some universities offer free, non-credit MOOCsavailable to anyone in the world. Others charge for courses and provide credits. The idea is still developing.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently started its first MOOC. The school plans to offer many free, non-credit courses through a project called MITx.
So far, most massive open online courses are in computer science, technology, mechanics and engineering. For example, students around the world are taking a free course called "Building a Computer Search Engine." Two computer scientists, Sebastian Thrun and David Evans, are offering this course through udacity.com.
Mr. Evans is on leave from the University of Virginia. Mr. Thrun is a Stanford research professor and a Google Fellow best known for his work on a driverless car.
There are no education requirements for the course. The students watch short videos. Then, says Mr. Evans, they take informal, ungraded quizzes after the videos each week for six weeks.
They can repeatedly watch the videos and take the quizzes whenever they want.
Students receive homework. They join online groups to exchange questions and answers about the course.
The teachers hold virtual office hours to answer questions that the students have voted to send them. They also present their own questions and observations.
The students take a final examination to show where they rate in the class. Everyone who finishes the course receives a grade and proof of completion. Top students get letters documenting their work.
Mr. Thrun started Udacity, which supports free MOOCs. Udacity hopes to make a profit in the future by connecting possible employers with interested students. On his Stanford homepage he says he wants to "democratize" education. Education, he says, should be free, accessible for all, everywhere and any time.

(SCANNING – ANTICIPATING – LISTENING - TAKING NOTES)
细节题答案往往由first, most, because, in any case, as a matter of fact 等副词或副词短语引出。
(如之前听过的文章中的原文是owners of the greenhouse, workers , hanging out a Go Out Of Business sign, 分别对应着正确选项中的owning the greenhouse, employees, putting up a Go Out of Business sign

Better tables
Two trendy restaurants in Paris give beautiful people better tables than ordinary people. Staff who used to work there talked to a Paris newspaper about the restaurants. They said: "The good-looking customers are led to the good places, where they can be easily seen; the non-good-looking ones must be seated in the corners of the room." The rule for celebrity diners was different - "pretty or ugly, old or young," they got the good tables. The waiters and waitresses also had to look good. An ex-employee said: "Anyone short, without a models physique and over 30 need not apply."
The owners want to make sure the restaurants have a good image so they put attractive guests in easy-to-see places. One owner visits regularly to check on his beauty policy. If he saw a "non-attractive" person at a good table, he tells the staff: "There are good-looking people, you put them here; there are bad-looking people, you put them there." Furthermore, staff could not give a table to customers who made telephone bookings, just in case they were not beautiful. Staff decided where to seat them after they came to the restaurant and looked at their faces.
